India Beat Weather and Amla To Remain

India Sustain No. 1 Test Ranking

India today retained their number one status in Test cricket after the thrilling victory over South Africa in Kolkata. The record books will show India beat South Africa, the world No. 2, by an innings and 58 runs, but it was much closer than that.

A journey that started at Eden Gardens almost nine years ago completed a glorious circle at the same venue on Thursday.

This has been a credible performance from the world's number on Test side. They were without their spearhead, Zaheer Khan, on the final day and the stakes were very high. In the end they timed it to perfection.

The man standing between India and history was Hashim Amla, his valiant effort confirmed that there can be shades other than black and white in a story of the united colours of South Africa. His patience, stamina and commitment were all exceptional.

In the end of it all, it was a thoroughly professional peformance especially when the chips were down for India.
